Regarding Sundar's announcement of the 1 billion people reportedly using Gemini, I think this very popular reply to his tweet is up to something:

"What percentage of that is people who are not paying for AI having it forced into things like search and Gmail, while literally telling you to remove it from such services? Add an "opt-out" button and we'll see how real your numbers are."

Sundar's statement can be interpreted in the way that 1 billion people have downloaded the Gemini app and are independently opening it up for making their AI queries. Zero chance that is the case.

The anti-theft fix cuts against the safety story too. To stop the trace extraction, the labs moved to concealed, encrypted reasoning blocks. That's the same chain-of-thought their own safety papers lean on as a monitoring surface, now closed to any outside check.
